KDE Commit-Digest

Nuno Póvoa describes his work on the Oxygen sound theme for KDE 4.0

Back in 2008 I was fresh out of moon lighting as musician and production assistant at a music studio. I kept making music (still do) and one of the privileges of that adventure was contributing to KDE. My first-ever interview was featured in this commit digest, where I shared my experiences with the KDE teams and the process that led me to develop the Oxygen sound theme for KDE 4.0.

Chaos Engineering Moves Beyond ‘Breaking Stuff’ to Highlight Business Value

This was a collaborative piece where I tried to highlight that chaos engineering extends beyond managing operational issues. It's a valuable tool for cybersecurity, allowing companies to simulate potential attacks and prepare their response strategies. This gives teams controlled exposure to cybersecurity disasters, enhancing their readiness for real-world incidents. (this is a devops outlet, so I thought it was important to mention cybersecurity)

Market Scale

Are Enterprise Companies Taking Cybersecurity Seriously Enough?

Video interview - scary stuff - Despite having mature cybersecurity programs, no company is immune to risks. I proposed that companies should share cybersecurity data and intelligence (call-back!), which would be a win-win for the market. I emphasized the need for proactive security measures and the use of behavioral machine learning-based analytics to identify potential risks.

Dissertation - E. C. Malone

Genres, Communities, and Practices

While I didn't contribute directly to this work, I'm honored to be mentioned in the acknowledgments. Dr. Malone, is not only one of my closest friends but also the token 'smartest person I know' . The dissertation presents a compelling argument for a communitarian, practice-based theory of genre and aesthetic value, underscoring the social nature of genres and their crucial role in shaping aesthetic practices, values, and concepts. The work delves into the intricate dynamics between audience members, fans, and the evolution of a genre, while also exploring the nuanced mediation of aesthetic predicates. It culminates in an exploration of how artists and audiences within a genre can unite around a shared practical identity, offering a needed perspective on the interplay between community, practice, and genre.

Threat Intelligence Should Be Shared Not Shamed By Nuno Povoa, Eurofins Cybersecurity US

In this article I try to make the point that one of the main issues in cyber defense is the lack of a clear understanding of cybersecurity risks and their impact within companies. There's a significant gap between the IT and operational departments, leading to insufficient sharing of security-related information. I also try to sneak in there The idea of a universal repository for threat intelligence, akin to NOAA's weather data sharing, which in retrospect, maybe I should have hammered on that point a bit more.
